Here is a little secret…I LOVE ITALIAN SUBS! Next to cheesecake, it’s one of my favorite go to foods. They just scream “EAT ME”.
There is a little hoagie shop in my home town that makes amazing subs. Their secret? Oil and Oregano. It sounds weird, because oil barely has any flavor, but somehow it makes all of the meats taste better…crazy right?!
Well that little sub shop is over an hour away from me now, and although my little town has a sub shop that people around here just adore, I can’t get hooked on them. They just don’t do it for me. Sadface! Not only that, but the price of a hoagie is getting too high for my frugal self.
I was on pinterest looking for some good hoagie ideas, and although there are a TON and so many look delicious when I clicked on the recipes they had a crazy amount of meats that were really pricey. I wanted something that could work for my whole family and did not rape my pocketbook. I decided it would just be easier to create my own that can be totally customizable!
I used lunch meats that we normally eat..chipped ham, chipped turkey, hard salami, and sandwich pepperoni. I did not want to buy special lunch meats that would just sit in my fridge. Using lunch meats you normally eat will insure that there will be no meat going bad because someone will eat any left overs!
This hoagie cost me about $1.50 each! Bingo!
So use what you normally eat..it will work! I also added lettuce, tomato, mild banana peppers (because they have a sweetness to them, they really play well with the meat flavors. Even my 6 year old eats them sometimes, depending on her mood lol).
Now that I “hopefully” made you hungry, you can head on over to my GuideCentral page and check out the recipe. If you like it, show some love!
