A month or so ago my little sister was telling me how she signed up with Birchbox and gets samples of really great name brand products every month
I kind of wrote it off and forgot about it UNTIL an ULTA store opened up in my town. Now for a little back story on why I am Birchboxing it up these days…
It has been over a decade since I graduated high school. Ok let me cry for a minute before I continue…boo hoo hoo. When I was in school I was always up with the make up trends, the brands, how to use make up, and I took the time to actually put it on correctly including cleaning my brushes and all that jazz.
Then I had a baby and the time I put into my “look” got shorter and shorter until I basically just threw on whatever I had in my drawer and hoped it wasn’t going to make me break out from being super old. I mean seriously I don’t even remember when I purchased some of my make up and I am pretty sure it was from high school. YIKES!
The bad thing is that after I had my daughter my skin changed so much. I went from never having a pimple to being an oily pimply hot mess. Could it be from my expired foundation…maybe, but I gave up. I still wore make up but it was mostly just trying to cover up whatever was going on with my face that day.
Why did I give up? Why did I stop spending time primping after I had a baby? I think any normal non Beverly hills mom goes through this..and if you didn’t well then you were lucky! I regret not keeping up with it and maybe I could have saved my skin years ago. But it is time for a change. Take a stance with me girl!!
So after days of resisting ULTA I decided to go in. I think I was shaking a tad when I walked through that revolving door. I was shell shocked to say the least. There is SOOO many brands and products I felt completely clueless. It was terrifying and I had no choice but to ask for help!!!
The girl I spoke with sent over another girl…some young buck loaded with brightly colored make up comes over and asks what I need help with. I told her about my skin and that I was looking for a good foundation and I wanted to know what color of blush would be the best for my skin tone, I suggested a coral or peach and her response….. hot pink blush…can you say #hellno! I might be young-ish still, but looking like barbie is not what I was going for.
I kindly declined and just had her help me find a full coverage foundation that would be good for my oily skin acne prone skin. I about fell over looking at the price tag, but I have had enough with foundations that separated on my face and left me blotchy and shiny after a few short hours. Does this happen to you? Damn oily skin!
Although she helped me, I felt so awkward talking to her. She didnt seem to really care about what I was telling her and she seemed like she had better things to do after I turned down her hot pink blush. I left the store with my new foundation but I felt defeated. I swear I sat in my car and had to fight back tears.
When did this happen to me? When did I decide to give up keeping up? Do you know how many products are on the market that I couldnt even tell you what they are or how to use them and walking through ULTA just proved to me that I had to do something and quick!
When I got home this voice in my head reminded me about my sisters words of wisdom. “I should try Birchbox”, start testing products that they sell in ULTA, and figure out how to use everything correctly. So I did it, I got online and signed up. $10 a month to try products and get discounts seems like a fair price to pay to avoid the defeat I felt in UTLA.
This is the first box I received and needless to say I am so excited about it! One thing I do love is mascara. This Stila Huge Mascara is simply amazing. My eyelashes have never been so bold and dark! The dry shampoo…doesn’t even compare to the store brand ones from Wal-mart that I use. The foundation was awesome…I loved everything about this box…including the box!
Each month you get 5 products to test. You fill out your profile and they send you products based on your answers. That is a glorious thing!
Another thing I heart is that when you review the products you get 10 points..so every month you can earn 50 points which is $5 to spend on full size goodies you want to purchase. I am still a mom and hate spending large sums at once, so this is a great way to get them at a discount!
I have a little bonus for you too…if you decide you want to join Birchbox and test it out before November 9th you will get $10 in your account by using this link.
Since I was so excited about my first box I took the plunge and joined IPSY too. IPSY is a little different. Still $10 a month but they offer some bigger samples and sometimes full size products!! Score!
The good thing with IPSY is that they sample more reasonable priced cosmetics. Stuff you may find a Target even! And instead of a box you get a make up bag! If you choose to join IPSY you get a bonus of 250 points by signing up with my link that you can cash in on products!
I have spent the last few days watching make up tutorials on YouTube trying to figure out what I am doing with my life and a lot of the vloggers talk about IPSY and Birchbox so they must be good. I am 100% excited to try out both companies for a while and see what happens. I kind of have this sense of empowerment right now taking care of myself the way I should have been doing for these past years.
Don’t let the ball drop…join me on my mission to makeover my face and see if you get the same sense of empowerment! If you do join please reach out to me on facebook or in the comments below and let me know what you think. I am excited to get more boxes from Birchbox because I have some DIY projects in mind with them…WHOOP WHOOP!
I am curious though, do you watch any make up gurus on YouTube that you love? Let me know below or link them up on my facebook so I can watch their tutorials too!
So that’s it friends…I am totally recommending Birchbox and IPSY to anyone willing to join me! $10 a month well spent and I am already looking forward to my November box to come in the mail. It is like Christmas once a month!
