Part 1 // Part 2
Years ago I decided I wanted to start a blog, but I had no idea how to do it so I gave up.
Then last year I knew I just needed to dig deep and get the ball rolling. I wanted to show everyone how to make things, educate people on how easy DIYing could be, BUT I had no clue what to do in order to make that happen.
If I would have just figured it out back then, I would be so much further in the game. If this sounds like you take my advice and just DO IT! I am here to help you on your journey and get you started on the right path! I learned the hard way so that you don’t have too. Trust me when I say that I have probably made every mistake in the blogging book, but I want to show you what I wish I knew from day one.
Are you ready to start a badass blog? Feel free to yell…YESSS..at your screen. Here are 7 steps to launch a successful badass blog!
Pick Your Niche
This step should be fairly simple if you know what you want to do already. For me it was quite hard. I knew I wanted a DIY blog but I also wanted to blog about whatever came to my mind. The downfall is that everywhere you go to read about this topic they tell you that if you stick to a niche and stay on topic your blog will do better because your readers know what to expect.
Say one day you do a DIY post and the next day you do a post on why the grass is green…your DIY readers might not be interested in why the grass is green and stop reading your blog because your posts are totally off the topic they are looking for.
So think hard about what you want to truly right about. Make sure it is something you are passionate about. If you are passionate about food, DIY, stamps..whatever it is build your niche around your passion. Once you have your main topic you can create sub topics around that niche and branch off from there.
Here is an idea of what my main niche and sub topics look like to give you a visual idea.
I still branched off of the DIY and cover a wide variety of topics but I try to keep them all DIY related, even if it is a recipe or post about a family topic.

Choose a Platform (self hosted)
There are so many platforms out there to choose from and all in all you have to pick what you think is right for you. Your platform is what you will use to create your blog posts and control what your readers will see.
There are free and paid platforms and I am sure you are thinking “if I can get it for free why would I pay?”. Its quite simple. The free platforms are very limited. They own your content, they can shut you down at any time, they can restrict posts or images, and they may not allow you to monetize. You just have way less control over what you can do.
Each free platform has their own set of rules and regulations so make sure if that is the route you want to go that you do your due diligence. I personally know a lot of girls who use blogger and I have heard some horror stories about their sites getting shut down and losing all of their content and so on and some that love it.
In all honesty I did have a blogger blog years ago when I wanted to start blogging. But it was confusing to me and so I never did anything with it.
A little later in the post I will show you how you can get wordpress for free when you go with a certain host plan!
Choose a domain name
Let the fun begin!
I sat at my computer for 2 days trying to think of a name for my blog. You can go Bust A Name and type in keywords and see what creations they come up with. It’s pretty fun and may give you some great ideas.
I suggest using a .com if possible because that it is what the mass majority of people will be searching for so go with it if you can.
When it comes to picking a name you want to make it memorable and easy to spell. Do not do weird spellings of a word or something that will be difficult to remember. When I picked my name I did not do a lot of the things I should have done. I didn’t make it SEO friendly by any means. That means, that maybe only a handful of people on the internet will ever search “Live Randomly Simple” together. Stinks for me now and I wish I would have known this when I started. But I like my name and that is what matters I guess.
If you want to check how often your domain name would be searched for you can go to adwords.com and into tools, keyword finder. Type in the name you want to use and see how many times it is searched for. You may want to play with your words to give you the best success right off the bat!
